Best Movies of 2012

There were a lot of great movies that came out in theaters in 2012! Fortunately, I was lucky enough to see several of these movies and from them I have devised a list of my favorite movies of that year.
Here are my top 5:

1. The Avengers- The Avengers was simply an amazing movie for me. It had a great mix of action and comedy and the plot was really good. This movie was perfect in my opinion and it is the #1 movie of 2012 for me.

2. The Hobbit- The Hobbit is an enriching story that has great similarity with the book. I think the directors of this movie did a great job with this and I believe that it deserves the #2 spot.

3. Ted- This movie is filled with crude humor throughout and I enjoyed every bit of it. This movie has a simple plot, but the way that the movie is put together is brilliant and funny.

4. The Cabin in the Woods- This movie was labeled as a horror film, but I beg to differ. This movie had a good plot and a wonderful mix of comedy and suspense. This movie might not have been that scary, but it was very enjoyable.

5. Chronicle- Chronicle was a very enjoyable movie that has a simple, serious plot that shows how people can abuse power. It was a very touching movie that'll have you watching it again soon.

Some other movies that are worth mentioning are Project X, The Dark Knight Rises, and The Amazing Spiderman.

My Semester :D

This semester has been quite an experience. Although I must admit that my procrastination has been a huge problem for me, I feel that this semester has been really great overall.
I think I learned how to improve my writing and analyze books and documents bit more than before. I have mixed feelings towards blogs. Although they are very easy, I often find myself being late on them because of my forgetfulness.
One thing I liked about this year's English class was the fact that we had MWDS as an option for our outside reading assignment. I really enjoyed MWDS because they go straight to the point and ask for direct answers from your knowledge from the reading.
Another thing I enjoyed about the class was the straight-forward pace. I felt that there were less distractions than in previous English classes and I was able to focus more in class. I also like the final exam assignment itself. I feel that it gives me more freedom to write and read about a subject that I am legitimately interested in.
Overall, I found this semester to be really fun despite the challenges. I'll be sure to enjoy winter break and start getting prepared for next semester. See you in January!

Using Internet resources too much?....

Using internet resources, such as sparknotes, is a very popular trend for students. It allows us to gather information that we need at a much faster pace when compared to the possible alternatives. There are times, however, when we take this resource and abuse it. Using sparknotes isn't particularly harmful when you are trying to gather small information, but when you start relying on sparknotes for all the answers is when it starts to hurt you. Relying on Internet sources to do your work for you is counterproductive to your education, you are not learning the small details that are necessary for most assignments. You are also hurting yourself when you begin to take tests/quizzes. Relying on these sources, especially copy-paste, will often be known by the teacher and your grade will be affected because of it.
Some students know that relying on these resources will hurt them, so why so they sometimes continue to do it? I think some people rely on these resources simply because they want to get it done. This rush could have been due to procrastination or lack of time to prepare.
Using online resources should always be monitored. You need to learn what kind of information you can rely on and which ones you can't. Don't plagiarize!

Failing Libraries? D:

Public libraries are in a big crisis! In a time where technological advances can replace hard copies, libraries are slowly finding themselves hard to stay in business. The availability of books and references online is making it convenient for many people to just stay home and read. E-book readers are also growing rapidly in popularity. Not only is technology effecting libraries, but the economy is as well. Lack of government funding is forcing many libraries to lay off workers or close down libraries.
I think this change in society is a very negative one. Libraries can be very positive environments for many people and they provide free access to books, internet access, and other sources of references. For these reasons, I believe that they need to be saved. One way would be to promote libraries more and attempt to get donations from local citizens.
I think education would be greatly affected by the loss of libraries, and the government needs to recognize these problems and help fix it. I also think the libraries need to offer more resources if possible in order to attract more people. Hopefully this blog post will encourage you guys to attempt to do something or at least visit the library!
Save the libraries guys! :D

MLA!!

MLA format can be a great organizational tool as well as an annoying one. MLA offers a standard national format that has strict guidelines that should be followed if someone is trying to write a formal paper.
One of the pros for MLA format is the fact that it is very organized if done correctly. Every necessary bit of information is located at the top of an essay and it allows for it to be an easy read. MLA format can help people who have organizational problems by setting a standard for writing. Another pro for this format is that most people learn MLA and it can be used universally without causing confusion.
There are also quite a bit of flaws with MLA in my opinion. I find it kind of annoying to follow some of the specific guidelines. Not only that, but it is also very annoying when the rules change and you have to adjust to the new guidelines.
I still think MLA is still a great tool, however, and it should be continued to be used despite its small flaws.

I think this is what I went through when I was first introduced to MLA format haha:

Fiction vs. Nonfiction

One very debated topic in English Literature is whether fiction or nonfiction books should be the core for high school English classes. Studies have shown that the current curriculum hasn't quite improved the test scores for students. Because of this, many people believe that using more nonfiction pieces of literature will be able to help students be better prepared for college.
In my opinion, I believe that fiction books are only a slight problem. Fiction books can be great for students, but many of these new fiction books that appeal to teens do not meet school standards. That is what I think is the problem. English teachers need to find a ways to discover fiction books that are at a higher level and will be able to help students and entertain them at the same time.
I also think that in situations like these, a common ground needs to be found. I think that both fiction and nonfiction books will be able to help students immensely. Having a mixture of both in a curriculum can benefit students a lot more than strictly teaching one or the other. Hopefully this topic will be revised seriously for the Board because this affects kids in the long run and will be crucial to their futures.
Until next time!

Digital Textbooks?

Digital textbooks are a growing product in the educational system. As technology is continuing to merge with daily lives, digital textbooks are being promoted as a better educational tool than standard textbooks. There are many pros and cons for this. Let me go through some of them and let me give you my opinion.
Digital textbooks are great in many ways. They help the environment by causing less paper to be used to create standard textbooks. They can also be updated a lot more easily than standard textbooks and would be a more cost-efficient way to get upgraded textbooks yearly whenever new knowledge is needed to be told to students. Teachers would also have a lot more freedom in being able to choose which book to teach their students with, possibly making our education system go up dramatically.
Although digital text books have many great aspects to them, they also have negative aspects. Many schools would not be able to afford the technological devices needed to distribute these textbooks to the students. Even having the needed internet connection can be trouble for some schools. Even if common devices, like phones and other devices, are able to receive these textbooks, it cannot be assumed that every student has access to these devices. Should digital textbooks become a regulation for schools, they need to find a way to allow access to these textbooks by every student.
I think digital textbooks are a great idea, but we need to ensure that every student is able to get access to these copies and also make sure that schools will be able to afford this and not cut valuable programs and teachers from their schools.
